Most of our work runs through the southwest metro, including Jordan, Shakopee, Chaska, Belle Plaine, Prior Lake, Savage, and Chanhassen across Scott County and Carver County. Crews also work jobs throughout the wider Twin Cities metro, Minneapolis and St. Paul included, and out into greater Minnesota when the job calls for it.

QUESTIONS PEOPLE ASK US

Straight answers to what applicants actually call and ask about.

Do I need experience to get a construction job with SMH?

No. Bottom man and general laborer are entry points and we train you on the job. Pipelayer and operator roles move faster if you have run that work before, but tell us what you have done and our field leaders will figure out where you fit.

Do I have to be in the union to work at S.M. Hentges & Sons?

No. If you are not enrolled yet, we help hard workers get in through the State of Minnesota On the Job Trainee program. Union scale wages, union health insurance, and pension come with the work.

Where are your jobsites located?

Our crews work across the Twin Cities metro, with most southwest metro work running through Jordan, Shakopee, Chaska, Belle Plaine, Prior Lake, Savage, and Chanhassen in Scott County and Carver County. In Iowa we work the Des Moines metro out of our Bondurant office, including Ankeny, Altoona, and the rest of Polk County.

What does a bottom man do on a construction crew?

A bottom man works in the trench alongside the pipelayer, handling pipe, fittings, bedding rock, and hand tools so the crew keeps moving safely and on pace. It is the most common way people start an underground utility career at SMH.

Do I need a resume to apply?

No. The quick apply asks for your name, phone, email, and which roles you are interested in. It takes about 60 seconds on a phone. No account, no login, nothing to upload.

How soon will I hear back after I apply?

Your application goes straight to our field leaders, and they call. Watch for a phone call from a 952 number. If nobody has reached you, email humanresources@smhentges.com or call 952.492.5700.

Do you hire during the winter?

Yes. Civil construction in Minnesota and Iowa is seasonal and the heaviest ramp up is spring, but we take applications year round and we plan crews ahead of the season. Applying in the off season puts you at the front of the line.

What kind of construction work does S.M. Hentges & Sons do?

Underground utilities including sanitary sewer, storm sewer, and watermain, plus earthwork and massgrading, bridges and piling, concrete curb and gutter, erosion control, and site development. That range is why we hire for so many different field roles.
